South Boston Vietnam Veterans Memorial is dedicated.

Artist: Carroll, Harry. It is installed at M Street Park. The first memorial to veterans of the Vietnam War in the U.S. (the national memorial in Washington, D.C. is dedicated on November 13, 1982), it honors the 25 South Boston service men killed in Vietnam, the highest per capita loss by any community in the U.S. They were: Joseph Agri, Charles Bazzinotti, Richard Borovick, John Calhoun, John Cole, Paul Daley, Ronald Delverde, Joseph Desmond, Joseph Dunn, Devon Enman, Gene Grover, Frank Hubicsak, Douglas Itri, John Jacobs, John Joyce, Edward Milan, James O’Toole, Burton Peterson, Paul Sheehan, James Stewart, Edward Stone, Edward Sullivan, Joseph Thomas, Donald Turner, and James Wheeler. The inscription on the monument reads, “To All the Men and Women Who Served During the Viet-Nam War, 1961-1975, WELCOME HOME.”
